There’s something satisfying about ripping up old carpet. Well, until you turn around and there’s a big ol’ pile of it you need to figure out how to get rid of it, leaving you wondering if you can put carpet in the bin? Where can you dispose of old carpet?
Because you typically have quite a lot of flooring when you need to get rid of it, carpet disposal often isn’t as easy as just throwing it in the bin. We’re here with our years of experience in waste removal to answer every question you could ever have about disposing of carpet, including recycling options, council rules and why hiring a waste removal expert, like Scrap Global, can make your life so much easier.
Can you throw carpet in the bin?
Whether you can throw carpet in the bin or not depends on your council and their bin conditions. The Gold Coast City Council generally does not allow locals to throw carpet directly into their general waste bins, or the recycling bin, so you need to find alternative methods of disposal.
Can carpet be recycled?
The good news is, carpet can sometimes be recycled if it’s in good condition. Most carpets these days are made from synthetic fibers, like nylon, polypropylene or polyester, which can often be separated and processed into new products.
However, if the carpet is very old, mouldy or just in bad condition, some recycling centres may turn you away. It’s worth giving your local recycling centre a call and asking if they’ll take your carpet waste and their conditions before you set off, if you’re going to handle your old carpet disposal yourself.
How to Dispose of Carpet the Right Way
If your carpet is in bad condition or you can’t get it to your local recycling centre, you’re probably left wondering, “How do I dispose of old carpet.” This is how.
1. Council Kerbside Collection
The Gold Coast City Council doesn’t allow you to put old carpet directly into your bin that gets collected every week. You need to arrange for a bulk kerbside collection, which is free once per each for each household. Something called a FLEXiSKiP will be dropped off, so you’ll need to have a space kerbside, and you’ll need to haul the carpet into the bag. Delivery can take up to several weeks and it will often take up to a week to be collected again, so it’s not good if you need to get rid of carpet fast.
2. Waste Transfer Stations
One way to throw away carpet fast is to load it into a vehicle and take it to the tip, or waste transfer station. Some tips do a fee and you’ll need a big enough vehicle to transfer the carpet so this isn’t always the best choice if you have an entire household of carpet or flooring to get rid of. Waste transfer stations limit when you can get rid of your carpet too, as some don’t open on weekends or close before 5 on weekdays, depending on your local centre.
3. Skip Bins
Skip bins are a popular option for renovations, so you can load up carpet waste and any other building scrap as you go. However, you do need the space to have them delivered and place them while you fill them up, which may take a few days or a few weeks. So, you likely don’t want it ruining your grass. If you need to store the skip on public land, you may need a council permit, making it not as straightforward if you need to remove your carpet ASAP. On the flipside, you can get rid of larger quantities in one go.
